This role is the sixth level in the Engineering Series. Incumbent is responsible for assisting with the overall planning, direction, and operation of the Engineering Department, including the planning, design, and construction of public works projects. This class performs highly responsible engineering work of an administrative and technical nature in assisting in directing the activities of the Engineering Department. The Assistant City Engineer works with other city departments, outside agencies, and citizens regarding engineering, construction, and related activities; and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities:
- Supervise staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
- Develops engineering division goals and strategies, ensuring alignment with department (or City) strategies; manages daily operations to ensure alignment with division goals and strategies.
- Review construction plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards, adequacy of applications for permits and compliance with approved plans; and authorizes permits.
- Design and recommend engineering project plans and specifications, related to public works improvements and maintenance for water, sanitary sewer, drainage, streets etc. This includes developing short and long-term capital improvement plans, forecasting budget needs for capital improvement projects, design calculations and preparing project estimates.
- Administer construction contracts; negotiate contracts and change orders.
- Respond to public or other inquiries and resolve concerns and questions related to engineering procedures on specific projects and other information.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
- 5 years civil engineering or related experience, including 2 years supervisory experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Licensing in Professional Civil Engineer Registration, registration in the state of Minnesota within 6 months of hire
