What does an engineer do?

One of the most important things you'll do as an engineer is figuring out how things work and how to make them work better. You'll use your knowledge of science, math, and technology to design solutions to problems in the real world.

Designing

Engineers design things. This is anything from the electrical layout for a new home to the suspension system for a new car. Most engineering projects begin with some sort of problem that needs to get solved. As an engineer, you will then use your skills to develop a solution that meets the requirements set forth by the client.

Analyzing

In order to design a solution as an engineer, you must first understand the problem. This involves breaking down the problem into smaller pieces and then analyzing each piece to determine how it affects the overall system. Once you have a good understanding of the problem, you'll then begin to develop a solution.

Building

After you've designed a solution, it is then time to build it. This involves putting the design into practice and making sure that it works as intended. In some cases, you will need to modify the design based on feedback from the client or from others who are testing the product.

Testing

Once you build a product, you need to test it to make sure it works properly. This usually involves setting up test scenarios and then running the product through those scenarios to see if it performs as expected. If there are any problems, you will need to debug the product and fix any defects.

Maintaining

Even after a product gets released, you will need to stay involved to make sure it continues to work properly. This will often involve providing support to customers who are having problems or developing new versions of the product to address bugs or add new features.
